Act Quick

Four Seconds to Lose by K.A. Tucker Published: November 4, 2013 Publisher: Atria Books Received: Bought for my Kindle! "It's about trying to balance out the good with the bad. I don't believe in second chances" Cain has been owning and running a strip club for years. He takes care of the dancers: makes sure they don't have to do anything more than dance to get money, makes sure they aren't harassed in or out of the club, and never takes advantage of them. Then Cain's bartender Ginger brings a new friend to the club for a job: Charlie.  Charlie is living a lie. She's working for her step-father as a drug runner, but she hates it. She's just trying to make enough money to disappear for good. She never expected to meet someone who could make her want to stay. Tucker once again makes me want to crawl inside her characters. She does a great job of making the characters real and believable. Even though her love stories tend to ...

Just tell the truth!!

One Tiny Lie by K.A. Tucker Published: June 11th 2013 Publisher: Atria Books Received: Bought at discount price! "How do you figure out the right way to live your life?" One Tiny Lie  follows Livie as she enters her first year of college at Princeton. Livie is anxiety prone and scholastically-driven. Her pseudo-psychiatrist, Dr. Stayner, convinces Livie to attend a party and get drunk her first night at Princeton. This leads to Livie getting a tattoo as well as making-out with the hottest guy on campus, Ashton. Of course Ashton has a girlfriend, and even though Livie struggles to put their encounter out her mind, she finds herself meeting the guy she'd always imagined she would end up with. Livie must decide whether to follow the dream she'd built when her parents were still alive or find a new path. I love K.A. Tucker's books. One Tiny Lie shows grow in Tucker's writing style. And I have to give her kudos for tackling characters with me...

Hoped for better

I hadn't read a Colleen Hoover book before Hopeless . I own a different one (Slammed, I think, although I can't be sure.) My beautiful friend, Melissa, who knows way more about new adult books than I do has been suggesting Hoover's books to me for probably a year. In fact, she's the one who sent me Hopeless for Christmas. It was good, don't get me wrong. But it wasn't great. I expected to want to blitz through it. To get those little tummy flutters that come from reading about great relationships. But I didn't, really. Part of it was maybe the writing style. It was a little...I want to say simplistic, but I think that gives it the wrong connotation. Hoover just had the tendency to have characters say what was happening instead of feeling what was happening. I always hate when I make statements like that without proof, but there wasn't ever a place where I was like, better mark that down for my review. I just kept feeling, okay but show me th...
Ten Tiny Breaths by K. A. Tucker was a delightful, quick read. I enjoyed Tucker's character development and writing style quite a bit. The main character Kacey is relateable and not perpetually annoying, although sometimes Tucker overfocuses on what Kacey's thinking. It can seem a little obviously first person if that makes sense. The love interest, Trent, could use a little bit more development, I think, although he does stand independently. The relationship had a pretty decent build-up, but the end wrapped up a bit too quickly for my tastes. Overall, it's a great addition to the New Adult genre.
Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire  is the first New Adult genre book I've read. I was a little surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did! I was expecting it to be a little too heavy on the romantic build-up and too light on the actual relationship bit, but McGuire does a pretty fair job of balancing the two. I did read it in two days, so I was obviously caught up in the story, but I don't feel like I have a lot to say about it. I didn't like the ending. Like at all. I thought it was terrible. But I would definitely recommend this book to someone looking for a light read that gives you butterflies.
